The Marine Stadium has recently received great press, through feature length articles in AIA Architect, Civil Engineering Magazine and BusinessMiami, the publication of the University of Miami School of Business Administration.
Next to this summary is a poster for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, an annual event sponsored by the Miami Dragon Boat Club. The event will be held adjacent to the Marine Stadium on November 13. Dragon Boat competitions are one of the fastest growing outdoor spectator sports in the world and the Miami Dragon Boat Club, expects to hold large scale events at the Stadium once it is renovated.

We continue to work with the Marine Stadium Steering Committee to develop the site plan for the Marine Stadium. Announcement of exhibit of photographs of the Marine Stadium by Jay Koenigsberg, to be held at the National Hotel to kick off Art Basel. The American Express Foundation announces an $80,000 grant for an analysis, design and permit study of the seaside pilings of the Marine Stadium. The Coral Gables Museum exhibit continues to host an extensive series of events including panel discussions on "The Future of Miami Marine Stadium" and Boat Racing. The newsletter includes an extensive section about press and projects inspired by the Stadium including a new typeface designed by a student from New World School of the Arts and an exercise video.

Penny Lambeth and Violette Sproul will be initiating a major naional press campaign to capitalize on endorsements of World Monuments Fund and Jimmy Buffett.
On October 8, Miami City Commission decided to postpone a decision on the Virginia Key Master Plan until May, 2009. This will provide additional time to work on the plan. While the Master Plan has been much improved, we are very pleased with this result.

Discussion of press campaign. A major story put out by the Associated Press has been syndicated by newspapers all over the country. There has also been much local press, including a story on local ABC Channel 10.
Notice of two events; November 4 exhibition and presentation at the University of Miami School of Architecture and November 10 Fundraiser for Dade Heritage Trust. The magazine format "Preservation Today" which focuses on the Marine Stadium, will be unveiled at the fundraiser.

After a summer pause, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium continues to negotiatie wiith the City of Miami Administration to develop a workable plan to restore the Marine Stadium. We are pleased with the cooperaton we are now receiving.
The movement to restore the Stadium continues to get great press, including an article in Fast Company Magazine.
The initial members of the Board of Directors of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium have been selected. The Board-which will be expanded-is tasked with guiding the restoration and operation and procuring funding for the Marine Stadium.

Friends of Miami Marine Stadium made a presentation to the Marine Stadium Steering Committee in September which delineated the proposed site plan for the Marine Stadium. We will go back to the Miami City Commission and Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority of the site plan in the fall for approval. We also completed our Economic Impact Analysis by the Washington Economics Group and we are progressing on our capital planning study.

This is newsletter #67! Introduction to the exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum, which opens October 17. A story about the successful "Never Quit Challenge" a race to benefit charities benefitting veterans and their families which held its first stop at the Miami Marine Stadium. the Warriors were greated by Gloria Estefan and Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.
Finally, a great story by Phil Kunz, who attended the first boat race at the Marine Stadium. A flag that Phil retrieved on one of his visits to the Stadium is part of the memoribilia in the exhibit.

Over the last several months, we have spent a considerable amount of time talking with potential event producers and promoters and other potential Stadium users. We have been extremely gratified with the response.
The attached document briefly summarizes our results and we are quite pleased that the Stadium will clearly have a wide variety of quality uses. We are continuing our investigation of opportunities.

In late spring and summer, Friends of Miami Marine Staidum began to negotiate with teh City to assume the rights te renovate the Marine Stadium. Our initial negotiations were unsuccessful and we have taken a "summer pause" to recraft our proposal. We expect to have a new proposal soon.
We have received our 501c3 designation and we are in the process of selecting our first set of directors. The Marine Stadium continued to be in the news this summer with numerous articles and in the press, including the sixth editorial in support of the Marine Stadium by The Miami Herald.

Friends of Marine Stadium has now begun working with the City of Miami to secure funding. The Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) Commission, an independent taxing district, has approved $150,000 for a design, analysis and permit study for the sea wall and seaside pilings of the Marine Stadium. This must be matched by another source. If this phase moves forward successfully, the City can re-apply to the FIND Commission to fund the actual construction work for the pilings and seawall.
The Marine Stadium continues to get great press-there is a feature length article in Modern Magazine, and a web story prepared by Architectural Record.
Due to the interest in graffiti at the Stadium, we are now setting up a separate section of the web site to showcase the work of photographers who have documented it.

Also, a brief discussion of feasibility. Friends of Marine Stadium has now documented 24 experienced promoters and event organizations who are interested holding events at Miami Marine Stadium. Not only does this demonstrate feasibility, but we are now in a position to sit down with groups who might manage the Marine Stadium and show them how they can create a very successful business model.
If you know of a promoter or organization who might be interested in presenting events at the Marine Stadium, please refer them to us. As our survey becomes more comprehensive, our case becomes even more compelling.
