Virginia Key Master Plan approved by Miami City Commission
On July 22, 2010, the Miami City Commission approved by a 5-0 vote, the Virginia Key Master Plan. The Plan, which has been under development for over four years, includes the Miami Marine Stadium and Basin. There is no funding behind the plan-it is a road map for future development. But it is a very important positive step forward.
Previous versions of the plan had shown the Marine Stadium either demolished-or unworkable, surrounded by parking garages. This version of the plan was developed by a University of Miami Architetural Studio led by Jorge Hernandez, Co-Founder of Friends of Marine Stadium, and Hilario Candela, architect of the Marine Stadium. The plan was developed in conjunction with the Urban Environment League, which lead a coalition of other organizations, and the City of Miami Administration and Planning Department. The Marine Stadium is a key centerpiece of the plan.
